Ron Paul Annouces Run For Presidency: Could He Legalize Marijuana?

Ron Paul, member of the United States House of...
Ron Paul announced his candidacy for the office of President today, two days after an online fundraising campaign raised millions for the Texas Congressman.

Paul holds libertarian views on many issues including gay marriage, abortion and drugs.

In a 2007 interview with ABC News, Paul said that he thinks the regulation of drugs, including marijuana, should be left up to individual states.

"I would get the government out of regulating all those substances and I’d allow the states to deal with the problems," he said. "The first federal law against marijuana was 1938 and they did it through high taxation because they knew they didn’t have the authority to say that you can’t smoke marijuana. Today it’s gone berserk. The federal government comes in an puts people in prison that are sick because they’re using if for medical reasons and they’ve never committed a violent crime. That’s how absurd the war on drugs has become."

Paul has run for president twice before, the first time in the 1980s as a Libertarian candidate and the second time in 2008 as a Republican. During both of his campaigns Paul has vigorously defended the rights of individuals.

"I think the government’s role should not be involved in people’s personal habits," Paul said during his 2008 campaign. "I think when you defend freedom you defend freedom of choice and you can’t be picking and choosing how people use those freedoms."

Click HereIt's obvious from Paul's statements that he would fight to legalize marijuana if elected, unlike Obama who has shown his hypocrisy by admitting to enjoying marijuana as a young man but doing nothing to push for legalization.

The Chronicle would give it's full endorsement to Paul right now if it weren't for another pro-legalization candidate, Gary Johnson from New Mexico. Johnson has also publicly campaigned for marijuana reform and would also make a great president. At this point, we're going to wait and see which candidate has more steam a little further down the road.

Either one would be 100 times better than fucking Newt Gingrich.

If you're not already registered to vote, what the hell are you waiting for? You only have 16 months! Put down your bong and go do it now! We have two great candidates lined up. This could be our chance people.
